Vadlaheidi tunnel

Vaðlaheiðargöng (Vadlaheidi tunnel) is a new 7,5 km tunnel situated on the ring road close to Iceland’s second largest town, Akureyri. The new tunnel makes it possible to avoid Víkurskarð mountain heath and shortens the ring road by about 16 km or about 6 minutes driving time. Drivers need to pay road toll when they drive through the Vadlaheidi Tunnel and it is very important to note the fact that there are no toll booths or pay machines around. Instead, travellers must visit www.tunnel.is and pay for each single trip via card, either three hours prior to or after their trip through the tunnel.

For summer travelers Víkurskarð mountain heath offers beautiful views and will not delay your trip by more than a few minutes and is totally free of charge. However, during winter and if road conditions and weather is bad, we advise taking advantage of the tunnel.

National parks entrance & parking fee

Þingvellir National Park and Skaftafell National Park, a part of Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður National Park, are two National Parks in Iceland where drivers need to pay Entrance Fee / Parking Fee if entering. In both parks there are signs and payment information which nobody should miss. The charge at each park is based on length of stay of a vehicle determined by license plate recognition. The charge is for one day, valid until midnight each day, and drivers are able to pay on the spot through parking booths or pay machines or via these websites: Thingvellir National Park - Vatnajokull National Park.

Important info

Please note that if the Entrance Fee / Parking Fee / Toll Fee is not paid at the spot or via Thingvellir National Park - Vatnajokull National Park  or Tunnel.is, the entrance fee / parking fee / road toll is raised and the bill is sent directly to Circle Car Rental as the registered owner of the vehicle. In these cases Circle Car Rental needs to add a service fee / handling fee of 4.500 ISK* to the entrance / parking / toll fee. This is due to the work that has to be done by our staff in relation to any official inquiry the company must respond to.

*Note: The price is for each trip through the tunnel. If a customer drives through the tunnel more than once, the charge for each trip is added to the total amount.

We therefore encourage all our customers to make sure to pay the entrance / parking / toll fee at the spot or via the before mentioned websites.
